Energy Technologies Life Cycle Assessment (ETLCA)

Energy Technologies Life Cycle Assessment (ETLCA) – a tool for the estimation of life cycle environmental impacts of future UK electricity scenarios.

ETLCA Overview

The Energy Technologies Life Cycle Assessment (ETLCA) tool allows users to define UK electricity mixes out to 2070 based on direct carbon emissions.

Different combinations of technologies can be explored in an attempt to meet carbon constraints, and the resulting electricity mixes can then be compared in terms of 12 life cycle environmental impacts such as carbon footprint, ozone layer depletion and acidification.

ETLCA therefore allows easy identification of the environmental trade-offs between different approaches to low-carbon electricity.

The carbon constraints and electricity demand levels to 2070 can be defined by the user or based on scenarios developed within the SPRIng project, as discussed in the accompanying guidance document.

Updated V2.0 (5 December 2012)

ETLCA V1.0 has been updated to incorporate the background data from Ecoinvent 2.2 (as opposed to Ecoinvent 2.0 in V1.0) in the impact factors for some technologies. Datasets affected are:

  • “PWR” and “MOx” nuclear models,
  • “Coal GB”,
  • “Natural gas mix 2008”, and
  • all “Residential PV” models.
